What is an OEM Appliance?

An OEM Appliance is a computing device that is built to perform a specific purpose, such as running a single software application, as opposed to a generic computer, which an end user can load with many different applications. There are many types of appliances, such as Server Appliances, Storage Appliances and Network Appliances. The OEM Appliance is branded with your company’s look and feel, built with your unique hardware components (if needed), and loaded with your unique software image. To the user, it is a “black box” that does a limited set of tasks and cannot be modified, serviced or re-purposed by the end customer. Under the skin of the OEM Appliance, the hardware and software architectures are often similar to generic computer systems, but the OEM Appliance may have customizations in the BIOS or OS, or may include specialized hardware components.
